5 Solutions for Healthier Hair and Scalp
While genetics play a role when it comes to texture and thickness of your hair, healthy hair doesn’t just happen naturally. In fact, you need to consider a number of factors to achieve glossy, shiny locks. At RMUK as you know, we’re passionate about all things hair so we want to share our expert knowledge to help you achieve strong, healthy lengths you can be proud of.
If you’re wondering why your hair is dry, brittle and your scalp itchy, flaky and sensitive, then these tips are sure to give your hair and scalp the healthy boost they are craving.
1/ Eat Healthy Foods
Eating a well-balanced diet that is rich in protein is essential for healthy hair growth and preventing damage.
Lean proteins such as chicken or turkey, along with a wide variety of beans, nuts and seeds such as walnuts and flaxseed are sure to assist with healthy hair growth. Eggs are also a great source of protein as they contain biotin which is great for strengthening your hair.
If you’re looking to promote shine and growth, then you need to be consuming foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids. These fatty acids can be found in sardines, salmon and mackerel, however, if you’re not a massive fish lover, many find taking omega-3 supplements beneficial when maintaining a healthy natural shine.
Ensure you intake plenty of nutrients like iron, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, beta carotene and folate to help protect you from damage. Green leafy vegetables such as kale along with fruits such as Guava, oranges and papayas are sure to give you the boost you need.
If you’re dealing with hair loss then you may want to check your iron levels. Give your diet an iron boost with foods like lentils, quinoa, shellfish and dark vegetables. Quinoa, is a herbaceous annual plant grown as a crop for its edible seeds. The seeds are rich in protein, gluten-free and is a super food guaranteed to revitalise hair and boost moisture retention.
2/ Detox your scalp

Environmental residue and synthetic build-ups form on our scalp and hair day-to-day. Our Serie Expert Metal Detox Haircare Bundle is the perfect collection to cleanse away dirt and build-up while rebalancing tones for a refreshingly brightened finish.
Keeping your scalp clean and healthy is essential for normal healthy hair growth. Failing to care for your scalp will produce a build-up of sweat, dirt and access oils which can block follicles which can then result in a number of issues from severe itching to inflammation and dandruff.
3/ Use the correct products for your hair type
Using products specifically designed for your hair and scalp conditions is key. Unfortunately many drugstores or conventional shampoos are full of toxic chemicals and can actually do more harm than good.

4/ Increase scalp circulation

Did you know massaging your scalp can increase circulation, release stress and prevent hair loss?
Try incorporating a scalp massage into your hair care routine. When showering lather shampoo and take an extra few moments to massage your scalp gently. This gentle massage will increase blood flow to the hair follicle, which is the root of your hair.
You could even try massaging in a multi-use deep treatment hair mask. Packed with aloe and spirulina, you will not only boost your circulation but also strengthen your hair and give it a glossy sheen.
5/ Brush your hair correctly
First, brushing your hair is good for four reasons:
- Detangling
- Removing loose hair
- Increasing scalp circulation
- Boosting shine and health
Brushing your scalp encourages blood to rise to the surface which increases blood flow to the hair follicle which in turn stimulates hair growth. Nevertheless, brushing your hair too much can cause friction which causes damage, breakage and split ends. It is recommended to brush your hair twice daily, and no more.
Naturally fine or weak hair must be brushed carefully, avoiding plastic brushes or brushing too vigorously.

Wet hair
When your hair is wet it will stretch to three times its original length, so here are some tips to bare in mind when brushing wet hair:
- Start at the ends of your hair and comb through gently. Don’t force or drag a comb.
- Use your fingers rather than a brush to break loose knots.
- Use a detangler or leave-in conditioner to break up tangled hair.
- Use Redken Extreme Anti-Snap Treatment to pre-condition your hair before entering pool/ocean water.
- Apply conditioner in the showe and use a wide-toothed comb to comb the hair. Rinse and repeat.
Dry hair
- Move your brush in small motions.
- Start at the ends and work your way up
- Be as gentle as possible (most of the damage we inflict on our locks is from harsh brushing).
Remember
- Brushes must be cleaned as least once a week.
- All hair must be removed from your brush regularly using a comb, cotton swab or old toothbrush.
- While we all love to keep our hair styling on point, cutting down on heat appliances may give your hair a well deserved break.
- Using a few drops of hair oil on the ends of your hair can give it a more finished and supple appearance. Try our Biolage Exquisite Oil Protective Treatment!
- Protect your hair with a heat protection spray, such as Kerastase Genesis Defense Thermique Blow Dry Spray which offers heat protection up to 220°C
