Women’s Hair Colouring Style Guide

Foil Highlights

Foil highlighting is a targeted hair colouring method aimed at achieving designer hair colour effects. Hair will be woven at various thicknesses dependent on your chosen colour and pattern, and typically contains 4 or more shades. This is the most classic method of hair colouring, and is used for creating both subtle and statement looks.

At RMUK, we offer 3 main foil highlight effects:

· Full head

· Half head

· T section

Balayage

Balayage is a freehand method of hair highlighting, where the colour is applied using a sweeping motion. This gives a soft and natural gradation of colour depth. Like foil highlights, balayage can create both subtle and statement looks and can be a fantastic way of drawing focus to the shape of a hairstyle or face, as well as eye colour. For us, this method is an artform.

Full Head Colour

As its name suggests, full head colour is the method of applying colour to a full head of hair, right from the roots to the ends. At RMUK, full head colours are mixed bespoke to suit your skin tone and eye colour. It may also comprise of various sectioning and highlighting techniques to create a multidimensional, multifaceted finish.

Your colourist will discuss various options with you, including the choice between permanent and demi-permanent colour ranges. Permanent colours are usually oil or peroxide based which gives 100% permanent coverage with minimum fade. Demi-permanent colours are acid based, which leaves a gentler colour that fades rather than growing out.

Regrowth Tint

Usually performed within an 8 week period after having your last colour, regrowth tint is the process of recolouring your roots after a permanent full colour application.

Bleach and Tone

A full head bleach follows the same principle as a full head colour, and the technique is used when a tint isn’t strong enough to colour your shade of hair; you can usually expect a full head bleach if your hair is already a dark colour, such as brunette or blonde. We then tone the hair to achieve the final colour such as a pastel colour, or a bold, vivid shade.

Toner

A toner is a bespoke colour designed to enhance your final colour result. It can be used in all colour applications, and adds a final layer of tone to your look. It can also be used as a quick interim service to clean and remove unwanted yellow or brassy tones.

Colour Change

For a new look, a new you, or to correct a colour, this technique encompases several different methods to update the colour of your hair. This service always requires a consultation to help determine the length as well as the cost of the process.

Colour change is a lengthy process and can take up to 12 hours; sometimes it covers several spaced-out appointments to achieve the final look. Again this is determined upon consultation, and is highly dependent on the hair’s current condition. In any case the condition of your hair is paramount to us, so we will only do what we feel is safe to do in order to protect your hair’s health.

FAQ

  • How long does hair colour last?

This entirely depends on several factors.

Firstly, whether you have chosen a permanent or demi-permanent colour. Permanent colour will stay in your hair until it grows out and is cut off. Demi-permanent hair can last for 4-6 weeks, but taking care of your demi-permanent coloured hair is key to keeping it for longer.

  • How to wash coloured hair

Here are our tips for washing coloured hair:

    • Aim to wash your hair infrequently. We recommend washing every 48 hours at the absolute most, as frequent washing will fade the colour faster.
    • Wash your hair with lukewarm or cold water, as heat will not only fade the colour, but cause damage to the overall health of your hair.
    • Condition, condition, condition! This is the central ingredient to looking after coloured hair. Try using a deep conditioning hair mask, partnered with high quality colour friendly shampoo.
  • Can I apply heat to coloured hair?

Try to avoid applying heat to your coloured hair. This means leaving it to air dry, and minimising the use of applicators such as hair straighteners and curlers.
