8 Festival Hairstyle Ideas

Forgot to put hairdos on your festival prep agenda? Stop the panic because RMUK has you covered with these effortless, low maintenance styles that can withstand a weekend of dancing your cares away.

1/ Space Buns

Space Buns

Space buns are cute and edgy, a trend that erupted in 2020 and continues to grow in 2022, particularly around festival fever.

This hairstyle will keep the hair off your neck so it doesn’t get sticky when you’re dancing and is sure to enhance any outfit you bring with you. Wear your buns tight for a 70s vibe or loose to look wild.

RMUK advice: add some glitter to sparkle like the stars.

How to create the space bun look:

  • Brush your hair so it’s free of tangles then part it down the centre using the handle of the comb.
  • Separate into two even halves and tie both sides into ponytails on the top of your head, or where you feel most comfortable.
  • Twist one of the ponytails into a rope and spiral it into a ball. For a smaller bun, twist the hair tightly, or twist loosely for a wild appearance.
  • Secure in place using a hairband or bobby pins.
  • Repeat on the other side.

2/ Hair Twists

Hair twists

This technique works best for coarse and wiry hair that holds its shape naturally, but is fantastic for festivals because this style requires no washing or additional styling once it is shaped.

Leave the twists loose or tie them on the top of your head in a ponytail, high bun or with a hair scarf to change up your look over a festival weekend.

How to do a two strand twist:

  • Brush and smooth the hair, adding an oil based serum to add moisture
  • Starting at the side and working across, take a vertical section of hair and separate from the rest
  • Split the section into two strands and begin twisting
  • Finger twist the ends of the hair in the same direction as the twist
  • Continue taking sections until your full head of hair is in twists.

3/ Loose Boxer Plait

Loose Boxer Plait

The boxer braid is a hairstyle staple at any festival and is ideal for all hair types, lengths and textures.

This hairdo is easy to speedily throw together in the morning - you won’t even need a mirror - making it perfect for tent life!

How to create the perfect dutch boxer braids:

  • Brush your hair to remove tangles
  • Part your hair into 2 sections down the middle
  • Tie one side out of the way
  • Separate a triangle of hair from the top middle of the loose side of hair then split it into 3 strands
  • Fold the top strand underneath the middle strand. Then, fold the bottom strand under the now middle strand.
  • Next, take the top strand of hair, add some more hair to the strand from the same side and fold it under and into the middle.
  • Take the bottom strand, add some more hair from the same side and fold it under and into the middle.
  • Repeat the previous 2 steps until you can’t add anymore hair.
  • From here, you can choose to either continue the plait, or tie your hair into a loose pigtail at the base of your skull.
  • Repeat steps 4-9 on the other side.

4/ Braided Ponytail

Braided Ponytail

The braided ponytail is quick, easy and low maintenance and flatters any outfit. Wear it high to elongate your neck or low for cool chic energy.

How to create a braided ponytail:

  • Use a comb to brush out any tangles
  • Split your hair down the middle using the handle of the comb, and tie one side out of the way
  • Separate a triangle of hair from the top middle of the loose side of hair then split it into 3 strands
  • Take the top strand and fold it over the top of the middle strand. Then take the bottom strand and cross it over and into the middle
  • Take the top strand, add a small section of hair and then fold it over the middle strand.
  • Take the bottom strand, add a small section of hair and then fold it over the middle strand.
  • Repeat the previous two steps until you reach the middle of your head, with plenty of hair still loose underneath. Secure the plait here using an elastic hairband
  • Repeat steps 3-7 on the other side.
  • Collect all of your hair up and secure into a ponytail at a height that is comfortable for you.

5/ Loose and Free

Loose & free

Get the trademark coachella look by transforming your hair with beachy waves. One of the easiest hairstyles to achieve, this look can be thrown up at any time and, with the right hairspray, will last all day.

How to get the indie festival look:

  • Apply styling spray to your hair, making sure to mist all corners
  • Style your hair into dutch braids. Two braids will give you the perfect beachy waves, but if you want a looser texture, you could opt to style your hair into one central plait
  • Secure tightly with an elastic hair tie and leave in overnight
  • Split your plait with your fingers and run them through to gently separate the strands

6/ Beads and Feathers

Beads & Feathers

Adding bead and feather extensions to your hair can be the easiest way to lift a hairstyle from everyday look to festival ready in one quick step.

Soft neutral colours look fantastic in loose hair and add a touch of indie, and boldly coloured feathers and sparkly beads can be worked into braids to make you stand out in the crowd. Clip-in and temporary feathers shouldn’t be left off your festival essentials list.

7/ Braid Weaves

Braid Weaves

Braids are a common festival look so why not make yours stand out by weaving some colour into the strands. There are plenty of options for this technique such as clip in braids, semi-permanent bonded extensions and hair string that can be weaved seamlessly into plaits.

Not only will this give you a pop of colour, but it can also add length and volume to your braids so why not weave some colour into your plaits to jazz up your festival look.

8/ Colour With Pastel

Colour with pastel

Pastel is the go-to colour for hair at festivals and in 2022, the trend is only growing. You could opt for a full or partial colour using L'Oreal Temporary Hair Colour.

Quick, simple, stunning.

Festival Hair Care Tips

Should I get hair extensions done by a stylist?
  • Treat your hair to a mask before you leave to lock in moisture over the long weekend
  • Bring a can of hairspray and dry conditioner - these are festival hair care lifesavers!
  • Keep your hairstyles simple- lots of hair ties and pulling will damage your hair and leave it looking lifeless
  • Your hair may have collected sweat over the first few days; bring headbands and hair scarves to cover the roots and add some zest to your look. You could also add to the shine by glittering up
  • Give your hair some much needed TLC once you return back to the real world by using a deep cleaning Kerastase hair mask.
