There are celebrity parties and soirees, and then there is the fun-filled glamour fest that is the Metropolitan Museum Ball. While some call it the Oscars of the fashion world, the annual Met Ball or The Costume Institute Gala celebrates the annual opening of the Metropolitan Museum’s (The Met) fashion exhibit at the Costume Institute. For one night in New York, Hollywood and the fashion world come together in spectacular fashion providing a fascinating synergy between the world’s top designers and their muses
For most hair was kept in simple buns or ponytails as to not distract from the fabulous details on their dresses as shown by Lilly Collins, Gisele, Gwyneth Paltrow, Beyonce and Nina and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley

Talking about Gwyneth’s hair Errol Douglas said, “Mrs. Martin does hot. Again! She always keeps the hair old school movie star sleek and simple, focusing on its condition and polished finish, so that the dress can make a statement. She’s rocking a a huge SS12 trend in the centre parting, starting low for a little more drama fitting with the occasion. I love the shorter dress length to the front and the embellished pocket detail here, it makes sense to keep the hair stylishly simple.”
Side partings and curls were still on trend at the ball as sported by Hilary Swank, Amy Adams and Emma Roberts

Another hair trend worn at the Ball was the softly tousled looked as see on Heidi Klum, Liv Tyler, Scarlet Johansson and Chloe Sevigny

The Wet Look

Following on from the ‘80s trend, the super glamorous wet look was a favourite with Alberta Ferretti in his spring summer launch. Slicked back supermodel styles are easy to achieve and the perfect way to stay glam as the temperature starts to rise. For the perfect wet look towel dry washed hair to remove excess water. Apply a product such as L’Oreal to the hair, comb through the front sections and leave to dry naturally. Alternatively, after applying the gel, comb hair into a simple ponytail or bun and leave.
1920′s Style

Hollywood is embracing the ’20s this year with big screen releases of ‘The Artist’ and ‘J Edgar’. And fashion is following its lead with Marcel Wave inspired locks as seen at designer Marc Jacobs’ recent shows. The famous Finger Wave hairstyle is sweeping through Tinseltown with actress Diane Kruger at the forefront of the trend.
The 1920’s wave, though best suited to short hair, can still be worn by longer lengths by tying hair at the nape of the neck. A variety of techniques can be used to achieve the look including comb and fingers (Finger Wave) and styling iron (Marcel Wave). For a 2012 approach, start with clean, dry hair and massage a golf ball sized mousse through the roots to give volume. Blow dry slightly to increase volume further. Take a curling iron (small for neat waves and large for big bounce) and work in horizontal sections from the back. Wrap a small section of hair around the iron. Release and spray the section with hairspray to set. Take another section of hair, giving it a twist and hold at the root. Wrap the section, while twisting the hair gently around the curling iron. Spray with hairspray to set, and repeat process until all sections of hair are curled. Use a straightening iron on all sections to lift at the root. Take a good quality brush and brush through the entire head of hair to break up the sections and recreate the wave.
The Ponytail

The catwalks are awash with ponies. Led by Donna Karan and Ralph Lauren, the sleek ponytail and its many variations is dominating the spring summer runways. A-Listers love this look for day and night – it’s both polished and practical and provides instant red carpet glamour. J-Lo is a big fan and keeps hers sleek, swept off of her face and half-up half-down at the back to soften the look. Start with freshly washed and blow dried hair. Carefully spritz all over with a shine spray, making sure you don’t over-apply the product or it will look greasy. Separate hair into two sections, leaving some loose hair at the back. Take the larger section on top and comb away from the face into a high ponytail. Spray any wisps of hair that may have escaped with hairspray and smooth to the head. Spritz hair with a heat protector spray. Now with straightening irons, straighten the ponytail and add serum for a super glossy look. Take a section of hair from the back of the ponytail and wrap around the band. Secure end with a pin. Repeat with another piece of hair from underneath to create a larger look. Finish the style a-la J-Lo by straightening the underneath section of hair and adding serum.

Cheryl Cole
She has gone from brunette and bouffant to blonde and sassy but whatever Cheryl Cole does with it, the nation’s women love her hair. The 28-year-old has been voted Britain’s hair icon for 2011 with thousands envious of her thick, full locks.
Jessie J
Best known for her poker straight, ink black bob with a perfect fringe slashed above the eyes , Jessie J brought precision cutting to the forefront of fashion this year with her must-have head-hugging cut in a pristine shade of purest black. This year also saw Jessie experiment with wigs and extensions, showing off a violet bob and silver dip-dye lengths as well as glamorous waves and curls.

Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge
The latest addition to the Royal Family has fast become a firm favourite with the press and public alike thanks to her chic outfits and fabulously blow-dried bouffant.
Making glossy, gorgeous, natural-looking luxury a trend in itself.

Rihanna
A constant style chameleon, Rihanna’s styles this year have ranged from bright red corkscrew curls to a demure blonde for her photoshoot for Vogue magazine

Katy Perry
She was announced as the face (and hair) of ghd in April 2011 and Katy Perry continued to keep everyone talking about her barnet throughout the year with colour changes a-go-go. When Katy Perry dyed her hair pink, it didn’t come as that much of a shock to fans as she has been known to change the colour of her locks quite often. From black and pink to blonde and blue, this year has seen Katy give her pin-up girl style a comic-book colourful twist.
Alexa Chung
Alexa always manages to style her pared-down bob in different ways to keep it looking fresh and new. Straight locks suit the cut of the bob giving a more boyish charm, while gentle waves help soften the style making it a more feminine and vintage look. Alexa has become known as Queen Bee of balyage.
”I just like her tossed off hair. It’s chopped, she lets her natural texture come out, she doesn’t look tortured with blow dryers or straightening irons or anything. She is sexy, obviously very sexy, but in a fresh and kind of tomboy-ish way.”
Lady Gaga
The queen of kook tamed things down a bit in 2011, switching her OTT multi-coloured wigs for high-octane glamour – albeit with a trademark Gaga twist.
Mint green bouffants, silver chignons and pastel pink ponytails all ensured the first lady of pop stayed firmly in the spotlight this year.
