Huge hair is clearly the next big thing if Cheryl Cole and Sarah Jessica Parker’s new dos are anything to go by.
When Cheryl Cole stepped out in LA in May to take on the US X Factor, she seemed determined to get noticed and her huge hair certainly did the trick.
Reminiscent of big-dos from 1980s’ blockbusters Dynasty and Dallas, Cheryl’s well ahead of the game.
Within hours, another fashion icon, Sarah Jessica Parker, was donning almost exactly the same style when she attended the Robin Hood Foundation annual benefit in New York.
Bouffants are set to be a huge trend this season. So don’t get left behind in the race for some va-va volume.
The big backcombing trick
Backcombing’s got a bad reputation, but if you do it correctly, it’s great for full-on volume. First, pump some L’Oreal Lift Mousse 3 into your roots. Then, set your hair using large heated rollers.
“Starting from the parting and working your way down towards the neck, take sections of hair and wind them around the rollers. Pull each section 90 degrees away from the head, comb it through then wind one and a half times around the roller. Leave the hair to dry and cool before gently removing the rollers without disturbing the curls. Then spritz with L’Oreal Infinium Hairspray or L’Oreal Fixing Mist 4, turn your head upside down and using your fingers, separate and tease each curl to get more volume and a natural finish.”
“Next, without disturbing the curls too much, take inch-thick sections of the hair, hold fairly taut upright from the head – don’t get the tension too tight or you’ll damage the hair – and, using a fine-toothed comb, backcomb the hair about an inch from the root. Spray with hairspray into your desired big finish.”
Build a big extension
“Cheryl’s new Barbarella look – large curls with lots of volume at the roots – would be difficult to achieve for most of us without the help of extensions,”
Simply section off your hair, dividing it into two parts and securing the larger part on the top of your head, then clip in the extension to the back of your hair or have Great Lengths extensions professionally put in.
Smooth hair back over the extension, then repeat higher on the hair line, sectioning off the hair as necessary.
Smaller extensions can be used at the sides to create as much volume as you want.
Brush and buff up at the roots to ensure all clips are covered and hey presto, a big hair-do is yoursself.
Big-up a blow dry
If extensions aren’t for you, try bouffing up your style with your hairdryer. “The secret is to confuse the root of your hair by brushing it against the grain so you get extra volume. With your head upside down, spray hairspray on the roots of your hair and then dry using a large paddle brush, brushing away from the direction of your hair.”Concentrate on lifting the hair at the root as you curl, so you get the body high up on the head.
