What is the difference between acrylic nails and gel nails?

By RMUK on April 30th, 2013

We often get asked this question and there are several answers, from the way is it applied to the nails, colours available, the consistency of the products, what look you want to achieve, how long they last etc.

In brief Acrylic Nails have been around for longer therefore are better known. Acrylic nails are a mixture of powder and liquid that is applied to your nail and a tip to create length and then can be filed into any shape. Acrylic hardens on its own accord within a few minutes. They are easy to fix if broken. With proper care they are strong and can last as long as 3-4 weeks.

Gel Nails is a gel that is ‘cured’ under a UV light. Gels can used as overlays or applied to tips to add length to your natural nails. Gels come in a variety of colours as well as French. They tend to have a more natural look to them. Drying time for gel nails is instant once the final cure is done. Also gel is odourless. With proper care they can last 3 weeks before a new set need reapplying.

The results from gel and acrylic nails is similar. You can use either to lengthen or change the look of your fingers to make them look longer and more slender. Gels trend to give a more glossy finish while acrylic’s finish may be slightly more matte.

Gel trend to be better for the natural nails, if looked after correctly are they are believed to let your nails breathe more easily as it is not such a solid product.

Whichever you decide to have PLEASE remember when your enhancement nails need to be removed, have them done professionally and do not bite them off!!!

What does your nail colour say about you?

By RMUK on March 26th, 2013

Did you know that your choice in colour on your nails varies depending on where you live? It is just the same as your hair cut and colour, it is another form of expressing yourself

In London ladies preferred classic reds or nudes on their nails, Liverpudlians prefer brighter corally pinks, Essex girls prefer French manicure, Manchester girls love scarlet or taupe, and Newcastle ladies’ favourite was pale pink. And us Leeds girls rock taupe colours! Some of these results seem quite surprising. But what does the colour on your nails say about you?

Our nail experts were on hand with some answers

Red: Scarlet nails have a regal feel and are worn by glamorous women, who tend to want to get noticed by men. Unsurprisingly popular in London and South Manchester.

Coral: If you sport bright nails, you are an energetic and confident girl who isn’t afraid of the spotlight. Most popular in Liverpool and London.

Taupe: If you rock dove grey or taupe nails, you’re an androgynous, cool, fashion girl, who almost certainly lives in a big city. Most popular in London, Leeds and Manchester.

French manicure: The classic French tip has been revamped and is blingier than ever. No prizes for guessing that Essex loves this look more than anywhere else, with many TOWIE types adding Swarovski crystals to the tips. Most popular in Essex, London and Birmingham.

Hot pink: Fuchsia pink nails are for the classy and composed girl. This ‘no-nonsense’ nail enhances the act of flipping through fashion magazines and organising school events. Most popular in the Home counties and Leicester.

Pale pink: Pink nails are for light-hearted, optimistic girls who want their hands to reflect their fun side. Most popular in Newcastle and along the south coast.

Why RMUK and Working Hands Nail Spa do not use drills to remove nail enhancements

By RMUK on March 23rd, 2013

Acrylic and gel nails should only be removed using a solvent, acetone. Using acetone is the quickest, easiest and safest way to remove acrylic extensions. Acetone is used to break the bond in the polymer chains. At RMUK and Working Hands Nail Spa we will never use a drill to remove your gel or acrylic nails. Drills have been known to break down your natural nail bed which apart from being extremely painful causes ridges and bruising on your nails. Drilling on top of your natural
fingernail can cause permanent damage to your nail. The drill causes too much friction causing too much heat and lifting your nail from the nail bed. The friction is caused as an average drill is 35,000 RPM! Now that is a lot of friction!

Please never bite off your enhancements, and never ever use pliers! Yes you heard me right, we have heard horror stories of people doing this. People often try to remove their enhancements at home but we advise you come back to RMUK or Working Hands Nail Spa where our full trained  therapists will remove them for you. We do not charge for this service if you have them reapplied or a manicure as well.
